WOMEN'S RETREAT AND HEALING MINISTRY
Annual retreat and workshops for victims of violence and discrimination
The Church of Christ The King, Sophiatown hosted its 2nd Annual Women’s Retreat on the 6th to the 9th of October 2005.
In keeping with this year’s theme of ‘Healing’ and as part of the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of forced removals, the Retreat was held at Robben Island and was entitled
“Unburdening The Soul: A Journey”.
The history of Robben Island is one that resonates with echoes of pain that have left an indelible mark on the South African psyche.
Much has been written and recorded about the experiences of the political prisoners and struggle stalwarts that have come to embody the soul of Robben Island – the refusal of the Human Spirit to be destroyed.
This journey is a spiritual odyssey dedicated to those who had to wait , sometimes in vain, for a husband, a fiancé or a breadwinner for long drawn out periods only to have their pain swept aside ( by all of us) once freedom was attained.
The delegates included women directly affected as well as those who wished to accompany them on the journey in order to heal their own wounds.
The Church of Christ The King, Sophiatown stands both as a living memory of a painful past and a declaration of the triumph of good over evil. It is in this same spirit that we undertook this journey. The journey also aimed to preserve the memory of the role of the church as it accompanied people in their struggle for integrity.
This retreat is part of the ministry of the church and parishioners have begun to share their experiences from the retreat with others by way of workshops at the church.
The program comprised events over 3 days and included workshops on healing and will on Robben Island including a guided tour of the prison cells, contemplative prayer sessions and many more related activities.
